In Ohtsuka joined the Kawasaki Bank, during the year he is believed to have met Morihei Ueshiba Sensei, the founder of Aikido and this began a deep founded influential friendship. The metaphorical name, “Flying Swallows,” comes from the soft blocking sequences near the end of this kata. Wado Ryu also encompasses various throws and arm locks practised in JuJitsu. It is also known by its Chinese name of Pechurrin, and occasionally referred to as Haiku Hachi Ho a name given by Funakoshi.
The “Wado” story officially began in May when Hironori Ohtsuka registered his own style of Karate, which he called “Wado Ryu” and was recognized as an independent style. Funakoshi renamed this kata as Gankaku. As a consequence of Wado Ryu’s speed and delivery it is also one of the few Karate styles encouraging competition fighting.

Master Ohtsuka combined all of the previous styles he had experienced to create one style that mirrored Japanese Budo, recognising it as a true Japanese martial art called Wado Ryu meaning the ‘Way of Peace’. Ohtsuka registered the name of “Wado-Ryu”. Ohtsuka also studied different styles of Jujitsu, experimenting between styles concentrating on their “positive quality”.
